Three Questions for Daniel Hülemeyer
In his new role, Daniel is focused on steering Hellmann Worldwide Logistics' decarbonization efforts, with a clear goal of reducing the company’s CO₂ footprint and promoting renewable energy initiatives. Today, we talk with him about his goals and the challenges he faces in this critical role.
Hi Daniel! Sustainability, especially in environmental areas, has always been a core part of Hellmann’s strategy and, earlier this year, it was officially solidified at the executive level with Stefan Borggreve’s appointment. How does it feel to take on the lead of the environmental division during this pivotal moment?
Daniel Hülemeyer: First off, I’m so happy to be part of Hellmann during this key period and to have been given the trust and support to lead in this role. Sustainability - and environmental issues in particular - are not only central to Hellmann Worldwide Logistics’ strategy but are also some of the most pressing challenges of our time, especially in the face of climate change and its associated risks and shifts. We need to implement the right actions and make critical adjustments to reduce emissions, minimize our environmental impact, and stay competitive, all while keeping our customers’ needs and expectations in focus.
What short-term actions are you currently focused on to further advance the environmental side of the sustainability approach at Hellmann?
Daniel Hülemeyer: With our global footprint and diverse services, we face many demands, but this also opens up a lot of opportunities. Our Environmental Mission Team, for instance, brings in a wealth of expertise across all modes of transport, as well as for our warehouses and facilities.
Two immediate priorities stand out: First, we need to develop a climate strategy closely linked with our overall corporate strategy. This strategy should define our pathway to emission reduction and set concrete targets across the company. Secondly, we need transparent and effective solutions to help guide our customers on their own sustainability journeys and to offer logistics services that are as low-emission as possible.
Looking further ahead, what are your long-term visions for environmental sustainability at Hellmann, and how are you preparing the company for future environmental challenges?
Daniel Hülemeyer: In the long run, my goal is to make Hellmann climate-neutral and to significantly reduce our environmental impact. It’s a long journey, but we’re already planning specific steps, like adopting alternative propulsion solutions and establishing carbon-neutral facilities that can generate their own power.
The key to making this transformation successful is working together - and that’s where I’m focusing my efforts. On one hand, we need fresh ideas and innovations to speed up this transition; on the other, we need to channel energy and commitment into turning these concepts into standards. That’s where I can help.
To meet our objectives, sustainability - both social and environmental - must be fully integrated into all our planning and decision-making processes. This means balancing risks and opportunities and taking the right steps. If we do this well, my role as it exists today might eventually become unnecessary.
Thank you, Daniel, for your time, and best of luck with your new role!
